Artifacts of Living
This body of work was created with my first scanner - an HPIICX flatbed. I constructed a box to sit over the top so that I could scan with the top up and still control some of the lighting. As the experiment grew, I began asking friends, relatives and associates if they would put their hands into the box and hold still for 5 minutes ar so. Most would just hold their hands in some pose but others would take items from their pockets and drop them on the scanner to give a more meaningful context to their hands. I also added to the group of images with my own story and gathered flowers, rocks, personal items from my world and added them to the scans too. The final prints for this group were produced on a mix of devices and substrates for a large installation at the now gone Speakeasy Cafe in Seattle's Belltown district. I printed on aluminum, large coated cotton sheets, a 27 panel installation on a versatec printer, laminated and mounted on archival gatterboard and even 1 print on reflective mylar.
